Aerial Photography Is A True Adventure

Aerial Photography is an adventure...but you probably thought it was just for pilots. Actually most Aerial Photographers do not fly the plane.

Some folks are Commercial Photographers seeking additional streams of income. Photographers are ahead of the game...they already know about the cameras.

Some are indeed pilots looking for a way to earn a little extra money to buy the next airplane rental. Maybe they are working towards advanced pilots ratings and need a way to help pay for the training. You may want to learn to fly and don't have the money.

Or maybe you are an Adventurer looking for the coolest job out there. If your idea of an office, is in the cockpit of an airplane, Aerial Photography could be right up your alley.

Our business is taking off...come take a peek. We will show you all you need to get a good look at the industry. Is it for you? It's all inside our Aerial Photography Manual.

The Aerial Photography Manual For Pilots Photographers and Adventurers eBook David Rodwell

This is a great read and intro into this field. As both a licensed pilot and commercial property inspector who takes photos of real estate all the time, I have no idea why I never considered this field until now! The author provides a basic run-down of what it takes to get started and offers some tips to avoid common, costly mistakes. I'm encouraged to take my next steps in adding these services to those I offer as a freelance consulant.

The Aerial Photography Manual For Pilots Photographers and Adventurers eBook David Rodwell Reviews

I loved the book. I didn't know till I got to the end of it that I was in the book. I am the "truck driver" that David uses as an example. I hated my life driving a truck but raised 7 kids doing it. Aerial photography was my "escape plan". Unfortunately I had learned most of my skills doing aerial photo's the hard (read expensive) way. I had the shooting pretty much down before I even met David and looked mostly to him to teach me how to sell them. (I would not recommend the learn as you go method). I had many-many flights when I returned from spending 200 dollars in aircraft rental to find I had absolutely nothing that was usable. I have now been doing aerial photography for 6 years, I own my own plane, and make a good living "out in the boonies" of Utah as David puts it.

I see no reason to be critical of the book pointing to a website where one can obtain more information. I would have treasured an opportunity to go somewhere to find that information without having to learn it the hard way. I still often go there myself and learn better ways to do things even after 6 years in the business. I also see no reason to be critical of the "motivational" aspect of the book. Even though I have a successful business I still have days in a row where I can't seem to sell anything and wonder "what was I thinking to get into this?". Fortunately those times are offset by the many times when I have made several thousands of dollars in just a few hours. I intend to go back and read the book several times to help me through the dry times.

I very heartily recommend the book and also recommend that the "prospective aerial photographer" go further by going to the website and getting the information they need BEFORE they get to the expensive part (when the airplane engine starts). I love aerial photography and will do it the rest of my years. What a wonderful way to make a living.

This is a great book for its purpose. And it's purpose seems to be to provide a clear, comprehensive, but unfussy guide to someone who might consider aerial photography as a new venture and income source on a full-or part-time basis.

I personally don't fit into either category. But I enjoy photography and a friend told me I might find it a pleasant read. So why am I writing a review?

It's because it's rare in my experience to find a book that introduces an unfamiliar topic and makes it immediately accessible. Usually, there is too much detail or not enough. This book answered all pertinent questions that occurred to me. And though I'm not going to leave behind my current profession, I also enjoyed the humor, the candor, and the straightforward writing style.

I'd say this book is a winner as a basic introduction to someone considering making a career change who has at least a hobbiest's grasp of photography.
David Rodwell, the author of the book, is a great guy. I have listened to him speak at Oshkosh and, several years ago, he took the time from his schedule to return my call and talk to me about the business side of aerial photography. He is very passionate about what he is doing. He knows that aerial photography gave him a better life and wants to share that with others and help them achieve their goals as well.

Unfortunately, having said all of that, I do not recommend this book for several reasons. I already understand the profit potential of aerial photography, I don’t need to be motivated to pursue it as a business. I was looking for something with more technical information on running the business and doing actual photo shoots.

How do you have a serious discussion of any kind of photography with no pictures in the entire book? Not one in the entire text. Had I been able to thumb through the book in a brick and mortar store it would have been the first sign to me not to purchase the book.

There were several oddities about the format and presentation of the information. The cover of the book says, “ No. 1 Bestseller.” Since that had to be put on the cover before printing I am curious about exactly how this was determined. Does support that claim? There are no page numbers in the book. It’s hard to reference information without page numbers to go by. The table of contents does not appear until the end of Chapter 1. This information should be up front in my opinion.

There is a factual error as well. In Chapter 5, talking about lenses, the text says, “…a Nautical mile is 4000 feet.” A Nautical mile is 6076 feet. Most of us in the aviation community know this basic fact. Any calculations based upon the book’s measurement of a Nautical mile will be terribly incorrect.

Apparently the primary purpose of the book is to motivate someone to get into or explore aerial photography as a business venture. David presents several success stories to support that concept and I believe them. He does, on a couple of occasions, reference his web site which does have a free introductory lesson. However the bulk of the information is contained in lessons which must be paid for to review. So the book is a marketing platform for his website. The references are very few but they are there.

For those looking for technical information, how to guidance on actual photo shoots and/or managing an aerial photography, this book will likely be a disappointment for you as it was for me.
Short and full of obvious generalities.
Highly recommend this book to new and old Aerial Photography Enthusiasts! Very informative. Well worth the money spent !! R. Wilson
This book is a complete waste of money. Page after page of fluff, no meaningful information anywhere. What VERY little information there was in the book would have been general knowledge to anyone in the profession. Save your money, not worth .10cents.
Reading, so far ok
